At the close in Australia, the S&P/ASX 200 added 1.28%.
The best performers of the session on the S&P/ASX 200 were Beach Energy Ltd (AX:BPT), which rose 9.28% or 0.045 points to trade at 0.530 at the close. Meanwhile, Whitehaven Coal Ltd (AX:WHC) added 8.66% or 0.055 points to end at 0.690 andDrillsearch Energy Ltd (AX:DLS) was up 8.33% or 0.050 points to 0.650 in late trade.
The worst performers of the session were Aurizon Holdings Ltd (AX:AZJ), which fell 3.67% or 0.160 points to trade at 4.200 at the close. M Pharma Fp (AX:MYX) declined 2.83% or 0.040 points to end at 1.375 and Spotless Fp (AX:SPO) was down 2.71% or 0.030 points to 1.075.
Rising stocks outnumbered declining ones on the Australia Stock Exchange by 550 to 332 and 121 ended unchanged.
Shares in Aurizon Holdings Ltd (AX:AZJ) fell to 52-week lows; falling 3.67% or 0.160 to 4.200.
The S&P/ASX 200 VIX, which measures the implied volatility of S&P/ASX 200 options, was down 3.44% to 15.441 a new 3-months low.
Gold for February delivery was up 0.44% or 4.70 to $1073.00 a troy ounce. Elsewhere in commodities trading, Crude oil for delivery in February rose 0.57% or 0.21 to hit $37.72 a barrel, while the February Brent oil contract fell 0.15% or 0.06 to trade at $37.65 a barrel.
AUD/USD was up 0.47% to 0.7268, while AUD/JPY rose 0.20% to 87.64.
