apan stocks lower at close of trade; Nikkei 225 down 0.51%

Japan stocks were lower after the close on Thursday, as losses in theTransportation Equipment, Transport and Pharmaceutical Industry sectors led shares lower.

At the close in Tokyo, the Nikkei 225 lost 0.51%.

The best performers of the session on the Nikkei 225 were Nippon Suisan Kaisha, Ltd.(T:1332), which rose 16.46% or 80.0 points to trade at 566.0 at the close. Meanwhile,Maruha Nichiro Corp (T:1333) added 3.74% or 75.0 points to end at 2081.0 and Hitachi Construction Machinery Co (T:6305) was up 3.15% or 57.0 points to 1867.0 in late trade.

The worst performers of the session were Kyowa Hakko Kirin Co., Ltd. (T:4151), which fell 11.01% or 229.0 points to trade at 1850.0 at the close. Konami Corp. (T:9766) declined 4.74% or 139.0 points to end at 2791.0 and Eisai Co., Ltd. (T:4523) was down 3.31% or 268.0 points to 7818.0.

Falling stocks outnumbered advancing ones on the Tokyo Stock Exchange by 1514 to 363.

Shares in Nippon Suisan Kaisha, Ltd. (T:1332) rose to 3-years highs; rising 16.46% or 80.0 to 566.0.

The Nikkei Volatility, which measures the implied volatility of Nikkei 225 options, was up 0.98% to 20.68.

Crude oil for February delivery was up 0.57% or 0.21 to $37.72 a barrel. Elsewhere in commodities trading, Brent oil for delivery in February fell 0.11% or 0.04 to hit $37.66 a barrel, while the February Gold contract rose 0.45% or 4.80 to trade at $1073.10 a troy ounce.

USD/JPY was down 0.27% to 120.60, while EUR/JPY fell 0.09% to 131.84.

The US Dollar Index was down 0.15% at 98.23
